Summary/Abstract: This paper presents a version of comments made at the colloquium organised last November in response to the essay by Dr Papić which opens this volume. It is a partial attempt to set out and apply a framework for understanding both the current and the long-term situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It introduces eight forms or levels of analysis that I believe to be important both for diagnosing what people misunderstand about how politics, political conflict, and political cooperation work in the country and therefore also the prospects for escalation and/or reform. Without the appropriate tools for thought or models we can neither describe what has actually happened nor attempt to forecast what may yet happen or even put it within a spectrum of the possible.
