Summary/Abstract: Recently, an unusual medieval copper coin was documented, with noticeable, mostly Byzantine, stylistic characteristics and a distinctive inscription in Latin. By interpreting this inscription, we can conclude that the issuer of this currency was called Vladimir. History knows of several Slavic rulers by this name, but if we take into account all the circumstances and available sources, in this context the most certain would seem to be Prince Jovan Vladimir, the Serbian ruler of Dioclea in the early 11th century and a later saint. This opens the possibility for us to interpret Serbian medieval coinage, and the appearance of the first Serbian coin in general, from a new perspective.
