Summary/Abstract: The dual nature of language as a linguistic and social phenomenon requires distinguishing between the types of global linguistic categories through the application of combined linguistic and sociological criteria. The criterion of standardisation is universal in variation linguistics, and neutral language referencing concerns only its standard version.
