Summary/Abstract: The transformation process of a queer individual into the person s/he wants to be – a woman/a man – is achieved by repeatedly displaying the gender roles attributed to the gender in question. In this way, the individual also reproduces the gender norms that are unwittingly imposed. A queer individual who goes beyond the norms imposed by heterosexual hegemony and accepted as normal is categorized as abnormal. S/he is described as a patient and treated to “correct” the abnormality. The aim of this study is to show the “gender performativity” in the transformation of Einer Wegener, the transgender character portrayed in The Danish Girl, into Lili Elbe through gender produced as a result of a series of acts, in the context of the gender performativity theory developed by Judith Butler, and to discuss the difficulties faced by the character. It is to reveal the violence that is realized through norms at the point where “reality” is confronted with the instability. In this study; The Danish Girl movie has been examined in the context of queer theory with the method of critical film analysis. Based on this theory, the performativity theory developed by Judith Butler in the context of queer theory was emphasized. In addition to this, psychoanalytic analysis was made in some scenes of the movie. As a result of the analysis of the film, the performative structure of gender was revealed. At the same time, it is revealed how the heterosexual matrix that excludes the character and how s/he unconsciously reconstructs the heterosexual matrix from which s/he is excluded throughout the film.
