Summary/Abstract: This essay discusses the iconography of the church of St. George in the village of Zlatolist in Bulgaria from 1876 – the period of the late National Revival. It focuses on wall paintings by local zographers (icon-painters) Minovi, and analyzes the rich informative images from a hermeneutic-anthropological point of view. The painting’s themes, through their symbolic language, are full of reference to both Biblical and current social problems, fulfilling not only a religious purpose, but expressing the mental needs of the society in its specific historical and cultural context.
