Summary/Abstract: The article proposes a case study on how a clash of temporalities is artistically managed and ideologically constructs a political scene of the Sienese frescoes from Sala del Pellegrinaio, painted in 1442 by Domenico di Bartolo in a cycle that illustrates the history and current practices of Hospital Santa Maria della Scala. The identification of political and ecclesiastical personalities in this scene is still subject to consideration, just like the historical occasions to which the artist strives to allude. The article will not focus only on event tracking (a visit of Pope Eugene IV in Siena, or the Council of Ferrara-Florence), but on how history is selected, narrated and even encrypted in art images.
