Summary/Abstract: The message adressed to the people of Israel by the prophet Saint John the Baptist, in addition to its strictly messianic aspects, also has an unmistakable reformative dimension with a social character. The reforming model of the society that he proposes is different from the Qumran model or traditional Jewish one and is characterized by a pronounced absolute dimension, by an invitation to contemporaneity to discover radical asceticism, to discover what is essential to life. The penitential and renewing message, with obvious social valences, is also taken up by Christ the Redeemer, in His mission.
