Summary/Abstract: The author analyses the issue of popular religiosity and examines its connections to “higher” religiosity as held in traditional Christian churches. Although this might seem as an anthropological problem, a detailed theological analysis shows that this is actually a key element of inculturation, i.e. Christianity’s flexibility in contact with different nations and cultures. Certain forms of popular religiosity, e.g. Far Eastern cult of the ancestors, were significant obstacles in Christian missionary activity or in strengthening of Christianity among already baptized peoples. That is why one careful pastoral and missionary analysis of this issue is necessary.
