Summary/Abstract: The ability to respond to the verbal behaviors of others helps children with autism increase conversational skills, social skills, as well as academic skills. When teaching intraverbals, the verbal prompt (echo) is the most commonly used prompt in practice. Several studies in the development of communicative competence in children with autism have compared the effectiveness of the verbal prompt along with a visual prompt in the form of a picture or text. The results of these studies do not clearly demonstrate which of the presented prompts is more effective in the acquisition of new intraverbal skills. In the presented study, the focus is on comparing a visual prompt, specifically a picture prompt, and a verbal (vocal) prompt in two boys with autism spectrum disorder in order to determine which of the presented prompts is more effective in faster acquisition of new intraverbals. Using the alternative treatment design, the number of sessions required to master the learned intraverbals were compared. The results were consistent with previous studies in that they did not clearly confirm which of the aforementioned prompts are more effective in acquiring new skills more faster. This suggests that the effectiveness of the prompts depends on several factors, such as the individual's learning history or the nature of the particular prompt.
