Summary/Abstract: The article concerns the incorporation of literary texts for foreign language learning. It consists of two sections. In the first section, the theoretical considerations are focusing on issues related to literature’s place and role in the teaching process of Polish as a foreign language. Most attention was paid to the varied stances of language teaching theoreticians on defining the degree and type of usability of texts representing old and contemporary literature. In this context, the authoress advocates the eclectic approach and justifies its usefulness. The second section takes the form of a descriptive illustration of the strategic approach working with a literary text, based on the Polish positivist masterpiece, namely The Doll by Bolesław Prus. The goal of this section is to express that proper profiling of exercises proves the timelessness of the old works and helps to break away from thinking about them as anachronistic in terms of content and outdated in linguistic terms on the one hand and on the other hand becomes a foundation for various oral and written linguistic operations which are useful in everyday communication and additionally develop the literary and (inter)cultural competences of foreigners.
