Summary/Abstract: At the beginning of the 19th century, the Papal States created legal regulations concerning the protection of monuments and the export of works of art. As the author of the article shows, the regulations became an impulse for the majority of European states that implemented the solutions into their own legal systems. Poland followed the pattern since regaining its independence in 1918 and mastered the law concerning the protection of works of art after the Second World War, also drawing from the Vatican legislation.
