Summary/Abstract: The paper analyses the complex relationship between the elite of Transylvanian Saxons and the diocese of Transylvania during the episcopate of Ferenc Várdai (1513–1524). Although many modern scholars have considered that permanent conflict between the Catholic high clergy and the Saxons inevitably led to the good reception of Luther’s ideas among the latter, systematic research shows that the leaders of the Saxon community generally collaborated with the bishops of Transylvania, even in the early 1520s. Despite the numerous conflicts related to tithes and other taxes, originating back in the thirteenth century, the Bishop of Transylvania and the Saxon University were well connected, both institutionally and commercially, and also had to collaborate on various military and economic issues.
