Summary/Abstract: This study discusses security issues in Central Asia and aims to provide a general overview of various border disputes, ethnic disputes, water disputes, energy issues, radical religious movements, environmental issues, and drug smuggling in Central Asia. The research question is formulated as follows: "What kinds of problems did the long-term exposure of Central Asian states to an authoritarian Soviet domination create in the region after 1991?" As claimed by the hypothesis, “Drawing arbitrary borders in Central Asia during the Soviet era, together with wrong water and agricultural policies caused some serious problems that compromised the security of the region.” The roadmap to answer the abovementioned question is illustrated as such: Firstly, after demarcation of the borders of Central Asia, a general assessment is provided as regards the problems that pose a threat to the security of the region. The concluding section discusses the findings on security issues in Central Asia and makes suggestions in terms of tackling these problems. This research is exclusively based on secondary sources. Moreover, in order to catch up with the latest developments on the subject, various media outlets like the Anadolu Agency, the BBC, and the TRT were followed. All the texts obtained by this means were subjected to content analysis.
