Summary/Abstract: In Tanzimat Period, when new educational institutions such as junior school and high school were opened apart from primary schools. The level of education of students who attended these schools was very low. In order to eliminate the reading and knowledge deficiencies of the students, primary schools/iptidais with the new method began to be opened under the control of the Ministry of Education and outside the control of foundations. However, primary schools/sıbyan mekteps teaching in old methods and primary schools/iptidais teaching in new method continued to provide education together. The state rapidly transformed the sıbyan schools to iptidai schools, assigning teachers who graduated from teacher schools to these schools and implementing the new curriculum in these schools. In Magnesia villages opening of iptidai schools which provide education in the new method, was accelerated. The letters and lists attached to them sent to the Ministry of Education by the Magnesia Education Director in 1894-1895 show that iptidai schools were established in most of Magnesia villages. In this study, based on letters and lists sent to the ministry, information will be given about which villages in Magnesia the iptidai schools were established, the male and female population of these villages, the number of male and female students attending the schools, the monthly salaries paid to the teachers, education commissions formed in the villages and the reading and writing level of students.
