Summary/Abstract: Participation of local community in the public decision making is an undisputed precondition of sustainable development of every territorial unit. In Poland this is slowly gaining acceptance though there are still only few examples of good practice in the field of social participation on a local level. To stimulate the cooperation between the local authorities and the citizens we need to improve the tools of participation in decision making. This paper presents the results of public consultations held in Wrocław and Zielona Góra in 2007 conducted by means of Internet surveys, the findings of which were used to define the principles of the future development of respective cities. The examples of Wrocław and Zielona Góra show the growing possibilities of using the Internet opinion polls in the public decision making on a local level.
