Summary/Abstract: My study presents different views on aesthetic values in cinematography. Like a work of art, cinema is also seen nowadays as an important part of this era, in which art is technically reproduced and which can still become high art through its unique language and specific aesthetics. In addition to its artistic value, film was also perceived as an educational, informative, even propaganda tool. But there are some film critics or aestheticians, like Béla Balázs, who believed that the aesthetic values of the cinema should not be the central ones, due to the fact that it addresses a wide mass of viewers. If in the fiction film, today’s visual effects or digital graphics, or the classic black-and-white images and editing from the beginnings of cinema created a heightened expressiveness, in non-fiction films, an aesthetic is created beyond the elements of the image, the filming and image editing techniques.
