Summary/Abstract: Jenő Janovics’s screenwriting activity has been unfairly forgotten. This article wants to shine light on his only preserved silent screenplay, The Exile (A tolonc). In this unique case, Ede Tóth’s original play has been preserved, just as well as Janovics’s screenplay, and the feature film Michael Curtiz made of it. The article focuses on the question of authenticity of the screenplay, the narrative structure, and challenges of the two-stage adaptation process.
