Summary/Abstract: The paper follows the growing popularity of sunglasses in Hungary, and the changes in their meanings, not neglecting the international influences on those processes. While sunglasses began the twentieth century as medical aid and safety equipment, during the interwar period, the birth of the modern mass society and its new phenomena (longer and more variously spent holidays, cult of the body etc.) played a significant role in their transformation into a daily wear. Over the course of a few years, sunglasses not only became fashionable and cool items, but also key devices of playing with gazes. As a consequence, by the middle of the century, the importance of sunglasses went well beyond light protection.
