Summary/Abstract: COVID-19 pandemic has had a substantial impact on public health all over the world. In order to prevent the spread of COVID-19, the majority of countries introduced restrictions which resulted in enormous economic and social costs. The main goal of the article is to study the impact of the restrictive lockdown on the economic condition of the state. For this purpose, the synthetic control method was used. The analysis was carried out based on data from Eurostat and OECD. The obtained results allow us to conclude that the decision not to introduce a restrictive lockdown in Sweden saved the economy of this country against a significant deterioration of indicators related to the deficit and public debt. At the same time, such a government policy did not cause any significant changes in the economic development of the country. The results are resistant to the change of assumptions in the study.
