Summary/Abstract: The present paper deals with lexemes of English origin (with the terminal suffix –ing) that have penetrated into the contemporary Slovak language. At first, we provide fundamental principles of lexical unit adaptation together with general introduction into the characteristics of –ing lexemes; the attention is paid to primary features and functions of the journalistic style, as well. The aim of the research process is to investigate the semantic adaptation of these lexical units in the framework of contemporary journalistic genres. The entire linguistic material has been elaborated within the journalistic texts subcorpus of the Slovak National Corpus utilizing the search tool Sketch Engine in order to illustrate the potential of using corpora when studying manifestations of the language synchronic dynamics. To begin the research process, the frequencies of the chosen lexical units in the style have been elaborated since this numerical factor influences their behaviour from the lexicological perspective. Furthermore, we have analysed semantic relations, which the studied units of language have the capacity to demonstrate.
