Summary/Abstract: The purpose of the study is to present and outline in chronological order the development of the cognitive and the socio-cognitive models used in the research of the protective sexual behavior. Health Belief Model, Protection Motivation Theory, Theory of Reasoned Action, Theory of Planned Behavior, Social Cognitive Theory, Aids Risk Reduction Model, and Integrative Model were discussed for their relevance for self-report instruments, theory-based interventions and health promotion. The presented models have an essential role in the research of the cognitive antecedents and the personal predictors of the protective sexual behavior and its self-regulation. The utility, some of the results and the critics of every model were cited, discussed and summarized in this paper.
