Summary/Abstract: Introduction. Adopting a proactive approach to one’s career is now becoming a necessarycondition for the effective planning, monitoring, and managing of one’s own professionalfuture, and thus increasing the chances of success in the flexible labour market. These issuesbecome especially cognitively interesting in the case of young people who are aboutto actively participate in their space.Aim. The aim of the article is to answer the question: how do young people who are in theeducation system, and are preparing to enter the labour market, perceive their chances ofsuccess in their career and what factors determine it?Materials and methods. The text presents the results of two studies conducted amongadolescents. The sample consisted of university students (N=354) and people studyingin vocational schools (N=697). The relationship between proactivity (as measured by thescale of proactive behaviour in a career by Augustyn Bańka) and the characteristics ofindividuals was diagnosed using specific statistical analysis procedures (Spearman’s rankcorrelation coefficient, V-Cramer coefficient, chi-square test, Student’s t-test, one-wayANOVA).Results. The collected empirical material indicates statistically significant relationshipsbetween individual features and socio-cultural and contextual factors that shape the professionalbehaviour of young people. Among other things, a correlation was found betweenproactivity and gender, educational achievement, self-esteem, sense of effectiveness, qualityof interpersonal relations, identity style, and the assessment of the chances of successin a career, and it was shown that the perception of professional success in subjective termsprevails in the examined young people.Conclusion. Proactive behaviour increases the entity’s chances of success in a professionalcareer, and recognizing the factors that determine it becomes crucial in the context ofpreparing young people to enter the labour market.
