Summary/Abstract: This essay analyses the effectiveness of the skills training programs in reducing recidivism rates, which are implemented in the EU countries as well as the countries of the Commonwealth – the cognitive behavioral skills training programmes that contributed to the revival of confidence in rehabilitation in the 1990s. The conclusion that was revealed from a number of meta-analyses on offender treatment conducted in Canada and Britain and also in parts of the USA, was that the treatment of offenders can have a small but significant effect in terms of reducing recidivism, if programmes are properly conducted in prison or in the community. At the very end, the author stresses out that treatment will never eliminate crime, but an effective work with offenders can reduce the human and financial cost of victimization, or in other words if benefits outweigh cost, then the effort is surely worthwhile.
