Summary/Abstract: In contrast to many other areas of customs law, customs infringements are subject to few international and EU coordinating rules. Nevertheless, the EU Court of Justice has been able to establish general principles capable of guiding the legislators and jurisprudence of each Member State, as witnessed by the Italian case, in which the application of the European principle of proportionality has led to a restrictive interpretation of the domestic customs sanctions regulations.
