Summary/Abstract: Our friend Ivo Banac passed away on July 30, 2020. How to state the violence of that fact, if not through the violence of enunciation? Grieving belongs to the friend whose loss preserves the memory, a memory that would not remain were it not for the pain of grief. The memory of loss and the memory of shared times. Void and full. Full of a series of encounters reconstituted, the chronology of which hesitates and sometimes has the awkwardness of dreams, crazier than the craziest imaginings of fools, as Descartes would have said, but it is a fullness given as a strange void. The fullness of a past fixed in its being-ness without any possibility of bringing about new memories or a legacy to come. A past emptied of any future and therefore immobilised as a gravestone carved in a memory that will itself also disappear with our own deaths. The fullness of this memory is the fullness of being-ness. It is because it can be immobilised in its being-ness that it becomes the object of the historian.
