Summary/Abstract: The article distinguishes between four stages of archaic designation according to the type of names: primordial (primary) forms; first level taboo names in the ProtoIndo-European language; first level taboo names in the early Indo-European dialects; old taboo names. It is quite possible for some of the ancient terms for wild animals, the result of primary designation, to have first appeared as substitutes for tabooed words which have not been preserved. This is proved by their descriptive inner form, reflecting the ancient Indo-European understanding of the specific kind of animal. As primordial (primary) forms here are considered those ancient names of wild animals which have remained semantically unmotivated for contemporary etymology (their inner form is not known) or they are old onomatopoeic names. Their inner form is probably related only to their specific denotatum (identity of sense and meaning) and they are not descended from other concepts.
