Summary/Abstract: The ancient myth “Prometheus Bound” used by Lazar Nikolov in his opera-oratorio of the same name unlocks the possibility of various interpretations in a wide range of historical, social and cultural contexts. Nowadays Nikolov’s “Prometheus Bound” is appreciated as one of the most significant works in Bulgarian music. At the time of writing and performing the opus in the 1970s, the hermeneutics of the allegory became clear in relation to both the themes and characters of Aeschylus’ tragedy set in the composer’s work and immanent musical decisions. In the present article, the embedded allegorical meaning of the composition is considered at the level of myth, literature and musical language. Allegory is an approach that involves deciphering the message on the part of the recipient. In this case, however, we are talking about a hidden allegory, devoid of an addressee, in whose mirror the surrounding world acquires the image of a dystopia.
