Summary/Abstract: Antonio Possevino was Secretary of the Jesuit order and was entrusted with some important missions by the pope Gregory XIII before being sent to Transylvania to supervise the foundation of a Catholic seminary in Cluj. He spent little more than a month and a half in the principality (March-April 1583), of which he visited the most important cities. He observed with an attentive eye the social, political and religious realities of Transylvania, and he brought them together one year after in a Commentario de Transilvania, which he dedicated to the pope. The present paper examines briefly Possevino's references to the city of Oradea, where he found a significant, if demoralised Catholic community.
