Summary/Abstract: Antonio Possevino was Secretary of the Jesuit order andwas entrusted with some important missions by the pope GregoryXIII before being sent to Transylvania to supervise the foundation ofa Catholic seminary in Cluj. He spent little more than a month and ahalf in the principality (March-April 1583), of which he visited themost important cities. He observed with an attentive eye the social, political and religious realities of Transylvania, and he brought themtogether one year after in a Commentario de Transilvania, whichhe dedicated to the pope. The present paper examines brieflyPossevino's references to the city of Oradea, where he found asignificant, if demoralised Catholic community.
