Summary/Abstract: This article aims to reflect on the social and cultural conditions of the ways war is shown in the media. Visual coverage of armed conflict depends on a given media culture’s persuasive aims, norms, and practices. For example, a broadcaster may show drastic images to evoke sympathy and solidarity with the victims (this then serves moral values) or merely to increase the audience (news value). The concept of the rhetorical situation explains which factors influence the construction of the visual message. Examples concerning the war in Ukraine illustrate how war coverage is linked to news values. Analyzing the participants of a given rhetorical situation: the sender, the viewers, and the protagonists of media reports allows us to show the connection or conflict between moral and informational values.
