Summary/Abstract: Discourse on oil is particularly present in contemporary Russian literature. The article presents research reconnaissance on the topic of fuels in Russian literary and cultural texts. The hermeneutic method is used for the analysis of Aleksei Parshchikov’s poem Oil (1998). The poet, writing in the spirit of Russian metarealism, poeticizes, metaphorizes oil deposits, thus avoiding difficult questions about Russian imperialism or environmental protection. He is interested in an eccentric network of metaphors evoking metaphysical visions, full of references to cultural texts from all over the world.
