Summary/Abstract: Atanas Milchev’s “Critical article” (Historical Review, 1990, fasc. 4) implicitly represents in the wrong light the problems related to the origin and the development of Pliska, the first capital of Bulgaria. The thorough study of the archaeological finds discovered during the excavations on the South Gate site in the Inside Town of the Bulgarian capital and the careful assessment of the concepts of some Bulgarian and foreign archaeologists give ground to make the following conclusions: the attempts to deny the Bulgarian origin of the big buildings in Pliska (first of all the Big Palace and the Big Basilica) are utterly unfounded and all similar “hypotheses” and pseudo-arguments are pointless.
