Summary/Abstract: The April Plenum of the CC of the BCP in 1956 was caused by external circumstances. It was an imposed reaction of the Bulgarian Party and State leadership after the 20th Congress of CPSU. The plenum provoked a strong wave of opposition within the BCP. In a number of party organizations the membership exposed the efforts of the top crust to conceal the truth and to extricate itself from the created situation by limited, palliative decisions and half-way reforms. At party meeting were condemned the characteristic features of the Stalin model of socialism established in Bulgaria in the late 40s, the growing social injustice and the erosion of the moral values in Bulgarian society. Following the example of the Soviet leadership, the CC of the BCP made energetic efforts to suppress the opposition wave in the Party and this process of suppression continued to about the autumn of 1956.
