Summary/Abstract: The events connected with the taking of Melnik and Seres by the Nicaean ruler John III Ducas Vatatzes in 1246 and the ensuing events that led to the uprising headed by Dragota ten years later are followed up in the article. On the basis of source information the view is expressed that the two big cities in Eastern Macedonia in the mid-13th century were incorporated into one administrative and territorial unit. This situation was preserved under both Bulgarian and Byzantine rule. The available data give grounds to believe that the centre of this region in all probability was the city of Melnik. It is assumed that this was so since this province approximately corresponded to the former domains of Despot Alexius Slav and by tradition retained its principal city.
