Summary/Abstract: The aim of this article is to present and discuss the lexical material collected among 5-year-old children concerning the understanding and interpreting twelve idiomatic expressions with the token head. The choice of the phrasemes was dictated by the idea to refer to the issues close to the child, encountered on a day to day basis, which are fixed in the linguistic tradition of sayings. Subject area of the idiomatic expressions was also supposed to encourage children to enunciate free statements about them. The study shows how children interpret selected metatextual phrases and how they define them using language.
