The Three Types of Polyphony in the Rhodopes

Summary/Abstract: This work reviews the types of polyphony on the territory of the Rhodopes, including the typological and genetic similarities between them. The author presents an outline of the studies and collection books with Rhodopean polyphonic folk songs. Parallels with the polyphonic types from the region of Pirin are presented. The structures of bourdons and their relationships to the primitive anhemitonic melodies in the Rhodopes are analyzed.
