Summary/Abstract: Given that spoken academic discourse has been examined to a lesser extent in comparison to the written one, the subject of this paper is the analysis of lectures from the structural-linguistic perspective. The lectures were recorded at the University of Montenegro and afterwards transcribed for the analytical purposes of more extensive research within our doctoral dissertation. Using Swales’ genre analysis framework (1990) as well as Thompson’s scientific paper (1994), considered as the single one dealing with the analysis of university lecture introductions, we have obtained the results which demonstrate that the analysed lectures are structured. Their structure is composed of internal units signalled by specific linguistic features. Moreover, we have found that the structure identified is not rigid, on the contrary, there is a possibility of mixing structural units, which, we think, is justified if we take into account the fact we are dealing with a spoken genre.
