About the Interrelation of Terms of a “Solomonar” and a “Hail-Keeper” in the pluvial practice of the Romanian-Speaking Population on the Territory of Bukovyna

Summary/Abstract: The article points out that only the people of Bukovyna and a few localities of Transylvania distinguish between a solomonar and antisolomonar (a hail-keeper); on other territories where East-Romans live, the name of solomonar is identified as a number of characters related to meteorological magic. In the late XIX– early XX century there were people who worked as professional, more or less successful hail-keepers and were in charge of keeping hail-clouds away from certain villages and fields. Concerning the genesis of rites performed by a hail-keeper, as compared to those of a solomonar, who is acknowledged by scientists as a descendant of Dakohets priests, a hail-keeper has to be recognized as a member of a village community, who possessed certain esoteric knowledge and received payment for keeping hail or other atmospheric cataclysms away.
