Summary/Abstract: The paper deals with the expressions of politeness in English and Montenegrin formulated with modal verbs, which can be found in the typical context. Expressions of politeness are common linguistic means used to achieve speech acts such as request, apology, gratitude, congratulations and condolences. Since the Monteegrin and English authors didn’t pay much attention to the expressions of politeness formulated by means of the modal verbs we believed that it would be useful to explore them systematically in order to complete their descriptions both in English and the Montenegrin language.
