Summary/Abstract: This paper deals with semantic pleonasms in Montenegrin. Since there is no electronic corpus of Montenegrin, the analysis is performed on a corpus composed of translations of English semantic pleonasms into Montenegrin. An assumption is made that some of the selected pleonasms have been imported from English into Montenegrin, while others simply coincide in the two languages. The paper ignores the question of origin of English pleonasms, i.e. the question of whether they are originally English or whether they have been imported from another foreign language. Therefore, regardless of their origin in the two languages, semantic pleonasms are examined as specific linguistic structures that must be thoroughly analysed before they are avoided or transferred. The results indicate that the majority of translators fails to identify the trap of semantic pleonasms or apply different procedures by which to “cure” them. The paper also includes a number of recommendations on what should be done to make sure the majority of speakers of Montenegrin avoid pleonasms.
