Summary/Abstract: This article deals with the meaning of the construction od + genitive; in particular, how the central spatial meaning of the genitive and the preposition od— defined as a source and removal and departure from a source—relate to all the other meanings of this construction. The author has emphasized the metaphorical and metonymic extensions in the meaning of network of od-genitives. The relation of od-genitives to semantically similar constructions that express a source of motion (iz-genitives, s(a)-genitives, and ablative datives) has also been examined, as well as their relation to contrasting constructions expressing the goal of motion. It has been argued that all the meanings of od-genitives are related to the central, spatiotemporal, extended from that meaning via several metaphors, such as: AGENTS ARE SOURCES OF ACTIONS, MATERIALS ARE SOURCES OF FINAL PRODUCTS, WHOLES ARE SOURCES OF THEIR PARTS, POSSESSORS ARE SOURCES OF POSSESSIONS, CAUSES ARE SOURCES, and MEANS ARE SOURCES.
