Summary/Abstract: The article of the well-known Bulgarian medievalist Prof. Ivan Douichev was read at the symposium “Bachkovo Monastery in Bulgaria’s Cultural History”, organized by the Institute of Art Studies at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences in 1984 and is published for the first time. The author provides interesting information about the founder of Bachkovo Monastery, the eminent Georgiean military commander on Byzantine service Grigorii Pakuriani. In 1082 for his good service and loyalty to the Byzantine Emperor Alexius Comnenus, G.Pakuriani received a generous gift in the area of today’s Bachkovo Monastery where he laid the foundations of a magnificent church. He drew up also the Statute of the Monastery in which were indicated the basic rules for the life in the monastery and strict instructions were given for its internal organization. For many centuries Bachkovo Monastery has been active on a broad scale as an Orthodox institution and as a centre of education and literature
