Summary/Abstract: The April Uprising of 1876 was the greatest expression of the national liberation strivings of the Bulgarian people during the National Revival Period. It is for this reason that it has been arousing strong scientific and public interest for 120 years now. Its first researchers were living participants and contemporaries of the revolutionary spring of 1876. Their studies were of a romantic and emotional character although enormous factological material had been amassed. Comparatively few were the studies on the causes, nature, motive forces, international aspects and political results of the Uprising. Later for considerations of the moments the questions of the April Uprising were pushed aside and the thesis was put forward of the “grave position of the people” as the cause for the revolt, laying stress also on the role of the bourgeois stratum in the liberation movements or on the balance between its military and political aspects. In point of fact, irrespective of the failure, the April Uprising proved fortunate, its was a winning cause, because it had a strong impetus on the political barometer of the Balkan Peninsula and opened favourable opportunities for solving the Bulgarian Question.
