Summary/Abstract: Cleared of the symbolic qualities that man assigned to it over time, the colour became nowadays subordinated to the functional and aesthetic requirements. The National Program for thermal rehabilitation of apartment buildings, promoted by the Ministry of Regional Development and Housing in collaboration with the local authorities led to an unprecedented urban colour experiment in the recent years in Romania. This article presents several examples of the chromatic rehabilitation (which accompanied inevitably the thermal rehabilitation) in Bucharest, Timişoara and Iaşi as well as a large scale chromatic experiment developed in Moscow. The aim of this paper is to highlight the importance of colour in the urban aesthetics.
