Summary/Abstract: The subject of the review article is a scholarly monograph Bohater literatury dziecięcej i młodzieżowej z okresu PRL-u. Między kreacją a recepcją [The Protagonist of Children’s and Young Adult Literature from the Period of the Polish People’s Republic: Between Creation and Reception] by Małgorzata Chrobak (2019). The article analyses the chapters of the monograph in which Chrobak elaborates on the subject of perception of the PRL reality in contemporary literature for young readers, the reading culture in the PRL, and – on numerous examples – depicts protagonists in novels for children and young adults written between 1956 and 1989, emphasising the issue of initiation. According to the author of the article, the monograph complements the state of research on the literary work in the PRL period and the PRL reality in the contemporary literature.
