Summary/Abstract: The resumption and development of cultural communication between Bulgaria and France after the Second World War were to a large extent influenced by the state of the political relations between the two countries. The criteria on which is based the periodization of Bulgarian-French cultural intercourse are politically determined. This article Is an attempt to outline the stages in the development of Bulgarian-French contacts in the sphere of art culture on the basis of unpublished documents from the Bulgarian archives, specialized periodicals and the achievements of Bulgarian historiography. After the Second World War up to 1948 were made the first steps to restore the cultural contacts between Bulgaria and France. The results achieved were due to the goodwill of the two countries and the commitment of state arid public initiative. During the period of the imposition of Stalinism in Bulgaria and the most acute forms of the “cold war” the contacts in actual facts were discontinued. In the middle of the 50s the cultural intercourse between the East and the West began more animated - the result of the emerging political “thaw” and the awareness of the possibility offered by cultural propaganda for building up a positive image of the particular state. In the 60s Bulgarian-French cultural exchanges became very intensive although the crises that broke out occasionally in international relations and mostly the ideological fears and bans left their imprint.
