Summary/Abstract: The first part of the paper is a brief survey of the studies dedicated to the influence exerted by Romanian language on Bulgarian. Mention is made of Fr. Miklosich, Th. Capidan, Al Rosetti, Vl. Georgiev, Boris Simeonov, Maxim Mladenov and others. In the Romanian-Bulgarian linguistic relations we distinguish two principal moments: a period of old borrowings, representing different spheres of the dialectal vocabulary (pastoral and agricultural terminology, household, botanical, technical terms etc.) and a period of modern borrowings, beginning with the formation stage of the literary Bulgarian language in the specific circumstances of the Bulgarian Renaissance in the 19th century, when the Bulgarian emigrants received important support on the Romanian territory for their political, journalistic, cultural activity – a fact that favoured the taking over of a series of Romanian lexical elements. Most of the Bulgarian borrowings from Romanian belong to the North Bulgarian dialects, while the literary words represent a smaller part. In the second part of the paper we intend to bring to attention some Bulgarian words (bg. претенция, bg. кана) whose etymologies have not being clarified yet or, in the case of which, in the dictionaries of the Bulgarian literary language there is no unanimous opinion about their origin. In establishing these etymologies, we took into consideration the two basic criteria – formal and semantic –, without neglecting the others (chronological, functional, historic and social, the criterion of the geographic spreading), which can prove decisive sometime.
