Summary/Abstract: In the multiethnic environment of the Banat region (Romania) we witness peculiar language situations. The inhabitants of Dudeştii Vechi use their dialect in everyday life, at home, to communicate with friends, neighbors, fellow-villagers – in unofficial relations, while the Romanian language is used in official contacts, at work and in school. The Bulgarian literary language is taught from the 1st grade and the Bulgarian literature – from the 5th. It is a kind of paradox that children of Bulgarian origin learn the standard Bulgarian as a foreign language through Romanian. In this context it is of interest to study the interferences at all language levels. After analyzing a number of essays written by 7th and 8th grade pupils, we point out the mistakes they do in mastering the Bulgarian literary norm under the influence of the Romanian official language.
