Summary/Abstract: The eminent Bulgarian historian of the older generation, Nikola Kondarev, for many years studied the ideology of Vassil Levski, Lyuben Karavelov, Georgi Rakovski and Hristo Botev. The author relates the debate that flared up among Bulgarian historians in the 50s in connection with the different stands of such well-known scholars as Mihail Dimitrov, Dimitar Kossev, Alexandar Bourmov, etc. concerning the ideology of Vassil Levski and other outstanding revolutionary democrats, fighters for national liberation. Nikola Kondarev, a prominent figure in the reading room movement before and after September 9, 1944, speaks about his work from the positions of a convinced Marxist.
