The identification of the author and recipients of some 19 th century letters from the collection of the National History Museum of Romania

Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this article is to describe how the authors and recipients of three sets of mid 19th century letters were positively identified. The full names of most of them are known and the persons in question belonged to important Wallachian boyar families (Florescu, Ghica, Bibescu), which is an advantage given the existence of books containing family trees of Romanian aristocratic families. However, because during the epoch it often happened for more people to bear the exact same name, establishing with certainty who was who, in terms of lineage and descendants, required the careful reading of the letters, the extraction of relevant genealogical information and their corroboration with that in the mentioned books
